Suddenly I am following all these new shows

It's been a while since that was last the case. So far there's Sleepy Hollow, Agents of SHIELD, and Legend of Korra. Okay, Korra isn't new, but was gone for ages, so it counts for the same. I'm also waiting for Almost Human to start, and my mother is wild about Once Upon A Time, so the Wonderland spin-off is going on the list too. And hell, since I'm at it anyway, I might check out Witches of East End some time. Sooooo much fantasy and sci fi! And with overarching plots, from the looks of it!

Sleepy Hollow:

Fun! A fish out of water timetraveller and haunted badass sisters, and lotsa creepy-but-not-too-creepy supernatural stuff. So far I'm liking it. In no small part because I dig a woman in uniform, and hot damn does Abbie rock that country cop green.

Agents of SHIELD:

I am not wowed by the first episode. I am actually actively unwowed. There was nothing objectionable, as such, but I'm not feeling the MCU vibe, or even the SHIELD vibe. None of the characters stood out to me at all, and... look, I just don't give a shit about Coulson. Not one single rabbit pellet. I think he should have stayed dead and though the possibility hinted at by Maria Hill that he's actually a replacement goldfish robot full of fake memories would be interesting from a worldbuilding standpoint, it's gonna take a whole lot more than that to make the character himself interesting.

One thing I am worried about is whether this series will serve to lavishly fill in SHIELD POV gaps between the movies and help tie them together and support them - the way the tie-in comics have been doing, basically - or whether it's going to grow into a tumor that drains the focus away from and uniqueness out of the movies by filling MCU Earth with so many one-bit superhumans and villains and gadgets and other marvels that every new thing turns into yet another dime a dozen gimmick, and the really big players and important developments as the 'verse progresses lose their impact.

I did get a good laugh out of Hill's character assessment doodle and the moment when Coulson stabbed and handed doped up Ward over to Skye for grilling. Just too bad we didn't get to see Skye doing a lot of interesting grilling. And there's a lot to be said for different sides of a character coming out under different circumstances and in different company, but it just strikes me as odd that Coulson would carelessly make a superior lose face like he did and that stern, firm Maria Hill would just stand there making an "eek" face and let him.

THAT BEING SAID, it's only the first episode, and I'll be watching religiously regardless. Because hey, expanded MCU canon!! And OH, OH - that part where Coulson goes "yeah I got shanked by ASGARDIAN MUSSOLINI"? Aaaaaah~<3

Legend of Korra:

I am, with some considerable effort, withholding judgement on this one for now. But I just HAVE to rage for a moment, because up until the literally the last one and a half minutes of ep 3, I was SO SO FRUSTRATED AND ANNOYED. I didn't even think I'd gotten my hopes up very high, but it still felt like they were dashed from a great height.

It was three episodes of all the worst of what I feared we would get at the start of Book 1; the girl avatar being manipulated and controlled and held back and given the shit end of the stick by a bunch of shady old men. Worse, her own mother and FATHER, the most trusted and intimate and therefore powerful male figure in her life, were in on the lies that took away all control she had over her life and her freaking REASON FOR EXISTENCE. Yes, she DID rebel. She DID break away from them. But the damn show couldn't even give her ONE LOUSY SECOND of completely justified, rightful anger without having her IMMEDIATELY falling for ANOTHER, blatantly obvious manipulation by a too-intimate shady male authority figure and having her cause a goddamn HOSTILE INVASION because of it. In fact, the only reason she found out the truth and severed ties with her previous manipulators at all was because a NEW manipulator set eyes on her and manipulated her into it.

Remember, girls. You can be the most important person in the world, the most powerful force on the planet, you can get screwed over by everyone you've ever loved and trusted and should have been able to rely on to act in your best interests and prepare you for the day you take up the reigns of your own life. But don't you dare stop listening to those men once they've proven to be a bunch of manipulative fucks with no respect for your wishes or autonomy, because ONLY BAD THINGS WILL COME FROM YOUR DESIRE FOR INDEPENDENCE OF THOUGHT AND ACTION.

Ugh. I suppose it remains to be seen who gets saddled with the narrative blame for Korra and Unalaq's clusterfuck in the end (Korra for her hotheadedness or the shady old men who caused her to grow up cripplingly unworldly), but I just can't bring myself to get my hopes up again at the moment.

On a less SO MUCH HATE-ful note, Tonraq and Unalaq are so blatantly alt-universe Thor and Loki it's cracking me up.

On a completely unrelated note, the tree in front of my window, my beautiful, beautiful curly willow, got brutally pruned today and now there's barely a stump left. I feel so naked. ;_;
