Scars & Sweethearts
“It’s not that bad,” Viv insisted, and mulishly refused to even growl when Tandri, with an unimpressed glare, pulled the next pottery shard from Viv’s cheek just a tiny bit more roughly than the last.
“You’re lucky you didn’t lose an eye.”
“I’ve been lucky that way a couple of times before.” Another shard. Tandri flicked it into the bloodied bowl so hard it bounced and flew off the table entirely. Viv sighed. “You’re only angry now because you were scared earlier. I get it –”
“Oh, sure. Been there, done that too. Nothing phases the big bad adventuress.” Tandri’s tail lashed like she was the one who’d had a kitchen appliance explode in her face.
“Well, yes. But what I mean is...” Quirking a smile, Viv engulfed Tandri’s tiny hand in her own and carefully pressed their foreheads together. Tandri’s power slipped beneath her skin, simultaneously soothing and invigorating. “Thank you. And be gentle, please. This ugly mug scares away enough customers as it is, if you maim me any further we might have to close up shop.”
Muttering, “Stupid,” under her breath, Tandri conked Viv’s skull with her horns. But she also kissed her scarred knuckles, tweezed out the rest of the debris with the utmost care, and when all the salves and bandages were applied, arranged the wild locks of her hair that had come loose in the blast to frame the damage like some kind of work of art, and called her the cutest orc in town.
