omnicat: (for Gundam Wing - Heero)

Title: Hindsight Philosophies
Author: Omnicat
Rating: K+ / PG
Genre: General, Angst
Spoilers & Desirable Foreknowledge: Episode Zero
Warnings: Odin’s casual talk about assassinations, the creepiness of politics.
Pairings: Past Odin Lowe x OFC.
Disclaimer: Gundam Wing is not mine. I’m just borrowing some parts of it for personal ‘entertainment’. Will return unscathed.
Summary: Odin Lowe has some choice words for the little boy he’s decided to take under his wing.
Author’s Note: Gundam Wing has now officially given me the creeps. The painfully young ages of the protagonists failed to do so, because a love for historic fiction and lengthy debates with my favourite high school history teacher had already made me aware of the sheer relativity of the concept of ‘children’ and ‘childhood’. The thought of colony drops made me shiver for only a few moments before instinctive blindness to the possibility of nuclear war and asteroid impact kicked in. (Those instincts are strong, courtesy of aforementioned history teacher and a father full of wild theories about the destruction of Atlantis. The awareness is welcome, but I don’t fancy full-blown paranoia as much.) But after a good long dig into Odin’s “Live by the day or you will/won’t live to regret it.” philosophy and some squinting at the AC timeline... yikes.

PSAN: Inspired by a comment of Septem’s in Episode Zero: “I’m surprised that guy Odin’s still in business. I thought he retired after I commissioned him for that job the murder of Heero Yuy...” My thought was that Odin may have tried to retire from the whole military and assassin business, but hit a spot of bad luck and fell back into the old way of life. And the rest, as they say, is history...
PPSAN: And to creep you out some more: Heero Yuy was a good guy, his death was a tragedy. If, on the other hand, the death of people like Hitler doesn’t bring an end to their ideologies... Sometimes I wonder how mankind has managed to last this long.
PPPSAN: As you may have noticed, the historical facts here aren’t terribly accurate. Odin isn’t trying terribly hard to make it so. Nor am I. 8D Gundam Wing awakens the philosopher in me sooner than the historian. (Which is probably also the fault of aforementioned history teacher.) If it bothers you, think of it this way: A) the longer ago something happened, the greater the likeliness that the exact details will be lost (at least to the mainstream history books); B) making sense of the chaos he caused had higher priority to Odin than factual accuracy, and these are the conclusions he comes to in his half-suppressed despair at his own fate and the general state of the world; C) he feels guilty whether he admits it or not, and these generalisations put the most subconscious blame on him.
